Cartoon of an office hallway where an employee with exaggerated, bodybuilder-sized arm muscles strides confidently past two coworkers, who stare in surprise. The caption reads, “Apparently, leadership muscles aren’t the only ones he keeps strong,” poking fun at leadership-development clichés by taking the idea of building leadership muscles literally.

Could you still do long division on paper right now, no calculator?

I think many of us would say, “Probably… but give me a minute.” Once the calculator made doing long division by hand unnecessary, most of us stopped practicing it – and the skill faded.

GPS did the same thing to our sense of direction.

Autocorrect and voice-to-text loosened our grip on spelling.

Now AI – an extremely capable tool – is on the scene. It can do so much for us and makes it easy to outsource key leadership skills like critical thinking, deep listening, and difficult conversations. So the question becomes: what capabilities are worth keeping sharp?

What Happens When You Stop Practicing

Almost every conversation about AI and leadership right now is about adding. Learn the tools. Write better prompts. Adopt the new systems. Move faster.

But there’s an equally important question worth asking: what skills do we risk losing by relying on AI?
