As a writer who’s worked alongside many others – and even trained my sister when she (briefly) decided to give it a go – I’ve noticed one thing that sets the best apart: they listen to feedback and proactively apply it not just to one piece, but to all future work.

Writers who make this a habit make the review and approval process significantly smoother and are a joy to collaborate with. This single action tells me I’ll want to work with them again and again – and will go to bat to keep them on my team.

This week, we’ve discussed the concept of managing up, and while anticipating your boss’s needs is certainly important, one of the most impactful ways to manage up is remarkably simple: excel at your job in ways that truly matter.

By consistently delivering quality work, sharing valuable insights, and thinking ahead, you create the kind of value that naturally earns trust and respect.

Welcome to the fifth and final day of the Managing Up Challenge! Today, we’ll dive into three practical ways you can elevate your performance and become an invaluable partner to your boss.

  • Day 1: Anticipating Your Boss’s Needs

  • Day 2: Winning Buy-In by Understanding Your Boss

  • Day 3: Bringing Problems to Your Boss the Right Way

  • Day 4: Disagreeing Respectfully and Productively

  • Day 5: Adding Real Value as an Effective Leader (You Are Here)
