I remember the day my team leader told me that leading through organizational change was the hardest challenge he’d ever faced.
I had a front-row seat to the show.
He was transparent with the team about the changes coming. He couldn’t reveal every little detail, but he shared what he could.
He took time to listen to his team’s concerns. (And empathized with them.)
He knew which team members were comfortable speaking up in a group and which ones preferred one-on-one time with him to share more openly.
And he made time for us.
He eased the panic and kept team productivity high during a time when it could have plummeted.
A few years later, I watched a different leader attempting to lead through the exact same challenge.
I say “attempting” because it was nothing like the brilliance I had witnessed before.
This guy avoided meetings. Dismissed concerns. Gave vague responses on the rare occasions when he did answer the team’s questions.
We felt unsupported, undervalued, and insignificant.
We were left wondering why we should continue putting so much effort into a company that clearly wouldn’t reciprocate when push came to shove.
