Building Respect with ISTJ Personalities

A male ISTJ administrator stands in an orderly office. He wears blue glasses and a blue shirt and holds a folder. Three colleagues, labeled “AL”, “BEN”, and “CINDY”, stand to the right, listening to the man. There are labeled file boxes and a tidy bookshelf in the background. To the left, the letters “ISTJ” are prominently displayed in blue.

How to spot ISTJs (Logisticians):

ISTJs (Logisticians) share the Introverted, Observant, Thinking, and Judging personality traits.

For them, giving respect means being punctual, well-prepared, and fulfilling their commitments without fail. They pride themselves on their dependability and expect their loyalty to be valued. If you have team members who are always on time, meet deadlines, and follow policies to the letter, they might be ISTJs.

ISTJs are the least likely personality type to say that once they lose respect for someone, that person can earn it back.

When I hear this, the first thing that comes to mind is that scene in Pride and Prejudice where Mr Darcy says: “My good opinion once lost is lost forever.”

While eloquently put, such an unforgiving stance could spell trouble for your leadership if you have discontented ISTJs on your team.

So, how can you earn – and more importantly, maintain – the high regard of these practical personalities? Let’s dive in and explore just that.

Today, we’ll cover:

  • ISTJs’ tendency to respect accuracy – and what that means for you as a leader

  • The workplace impact of valuing accuracy (the good, the bad, and what you can do to help)

  • An “Accurate-Yet-Adaptable” approach to help you win the respect of ISTJs on your team

  • How your personality shapes the way YOU think respect should be earned (if you’re an ISTJ leader)
