Building Respect with ESTJ Personalities

An ESTJ woman stands confidently in an office, emanating a sense of leadership. She wears blue glasses and a blue dress. Behind her, a team of diverse people are engaged in various tasks: a woman types at a computer, a man walks with a file, and another woman reaches for a binder. A final man is outside washing the window. The letters “ESTJ” are prominently displayed to the left.

How to spot ESTJs (Executives):

ESTJs (Executives) share the Extraverted, Observant, Thinking, and Judging personality traits.

They have a strong desire to be respected for their competence, dedication, and results. They may have difficulty respecting leaders who are disorganized, indecisive, or emotionally driven, and they can unintentionally come across as judgmental in their assessments.

Most ESTJs – 74% – say that people’s past achievements are a major factor in how much they respect them. What does that mean for you as a leader? Well, these practical, no-nonsense personalities value leaders who can prove their worth through demonstrated competence and results.

Let’s look at that a little more closely, shall we? As you read, consider how well ESTJs’ preferences align with your own leadership style and where you could perhaps adapt your approach.

Today, we’ll cover:

  • ESTJs’ tendency to respect competence and tangible results

  • How this tendency impacts ESTJs’ behavior in the workplace (and what this means for you as a leader)

  • A key leadership strategy to help you win the respect of ESTJs on your team

  • How your personality shapes the way you think respect should be earned (if you’re an ESTJ leader)
