An ESFJ man at a lively outdoor party. The man wears a teal shirt and pants, an apron, and smiles while holding a blue birthday cake with lit candles in one hand and a book in the other. They have an umbrella resting on their shoulder. Behind, a woman in an apron and three children are positioned around a picnic table.

How to spot ESFJs (Consuls):

ESFJs (Consuls) share the Extraverted, Observant, Feeling, and Judging personality traits.

They readily show respect but also have a high need to feel respected and appreciated in return. You might notice them fishing for recognition by highlighting their hard work and accomplishments. They can become discouraged if they feel that their efforts are going unnoticed.

ESFJs respect the hierarchy of the workplace, so your job title as a leader already secures you the respect of the ESFJs on your team, to a degree. They likely also look up to you as a manager and want to learn from you, impress you, and stay on your good side. But to earn true respect from ESFJs, your job title is not enough – you need to make them feel valued. In this article, we’ll explore exactly how you can do that.

Today, we’ll cover:

  • ESFJs’ tendency to respect leaders who show genuine appreciation – and what that means for you as a leader

  • The (potentially surprising) way ESFJs’ need for validation can impact the workplace and your team

  • A simple mindset shift that can help you earn respect from your ESFJ team members

  • How your personality shapes the way you think respect should be earned (if you’re an ESFJ leader)
